Shanmei VSI Sand Maker: Rock-on-Rock or Rock-on-Iron, Choose Wisely for Better Economy

Shanmei’s VSI series vertical shaft impact crusher is widely known in sand and gravel production lines. Its advantage does not lie in one outstanding parameter, but in providing flexible options for users.

Two Modes for Different Raw Materials

The VSI sand maker has two working modes: rock-on-rock and rock-on-iron. Rock-on-rock crushes materials by mutual collision between stones. It is suitable for highly abrasive rocks such as pebbles and basalt, which cause heavy wear on wear parts. Rock-on-iron is equipped with impact blocks around the impeller; materials hit the blocks for higher crushing efficiency. Its sand yield rate is 10% to 20% higher than rock-on-rock mode, suitable for low-abrasive raw materials like limestone. When selecting equipment, users can decide the mode according to the rock properties of their stockyard instead of purchasing an extra machine to adapt to two types of materials.

Particle Shape Depends on Impact, Not Compression

Workers at mixing plants know best about the quality of manufactured sand. Excessive flaky particles will impair the workability of concrete. The working principle of VSI is to throw materials out through a high-speed rotating impeller and crush them by collision. The finished particles are mostly cubic, and the content of flaky particles can usually be controlled at 5%–8%. This index meets the demand of ordinary commercial concrete. For high-standard projects, fine adjustment can be realized by changing impeller speed and feeding method.

Practical Considerations for Maintenance

Frequent shutdowns for part replacement are the biggest headache for sand makers. Shanmei VSI is equipped with an oil lubrication system, which achieves better heat dissipation than grease lubrication and relatively lower failure rate of rotor bearings. The machine is fitted with vibration detection and temperature monitoring. It will shut down automatically when abnormal bearing temperature or rotor unbalance is detected, avoiding severe seizure. Wear parts are designed for easy disassembly and assembly. Complete replacement of wear parts does not require full disassembly of the whole machine, shortening downtime.

For sand and gravel plants with an annual output of hundreds of thousands of tons, a stably running sand maker is the most valuable asset. The VSI is not overly “intelligent”, but it gives users the initiative: choose the right mode for specific materials and adjust parameters for target products.
