Single-cylinder cone crushers are widely used in the mining and sand and gravel aggregate industries as medium and fine crushing equipment. They utilize a single hydraulic cylinder to simultaneously perform multiple functions, including discharge opening adjustment, iron overload protection, and cavity clearing. While this structure offers unique advantages, it also has some inherent limitations.

Simple Structure and High Reliability

Because of a single hydraulic cylinder, the mechanical structure is much simpler than that of a multi-cylinder cone crusher, with fewer parts and fewer potential failure points, resulting in more stable and reliable operation.

High Degree of Automation and Easy Operation

The hydraulic system easily adjusts the discharge opening and iron overload protection, eliminating the tedious manual adjustments required by spring cone crushers. The PLC control system monitors parameters such as spindle position, oil pressure, and oil temperature in real time, enabling automated operation.

Excellent over-metal protection

When uncrushable objects (such as iron blocks) enter the crushing chamber, the hydraulic system automatically lowers the fixed cone, quickly discharging the foreign object and then automatically resets, effectively protecting the main unit from damage and minimizing downtime.

High production efficiency and excellent finished product shape

Using the laminated crushing principle, the crushing force is strong and can effectively crush medium- to high-hardness materials. The finished particles are mostly cubic, with low levels of needle-like flakes, resulting in excellent product quality.

Easy maintenance and low operating costs

The simple structure means easier routine maintenance and inspection. Wear parts are relatively easy to replace, and long-term operating and maintenance costs are generally lower than those of more complex multi-cylinder cone crushers.

Disadvantages of single-cylinder cone crushers

Poor ability to handle sticky and wet materials

This is the main disadvantage of the single-cylinder design. When processing materials with high mud or moisture content, the discharge port is prone to clogging, and frequent activation of the hydraulic system’s over-metal protection can disrupt normal production, resulting in reduced output.

The product particle size adjustment range is relatively narrow.

Although hydraulic adjustment is possible, the output particle size is not as flexible as that of a multi-cylinder cone crusher. To achieve a different product range, it may be necessary to replace the crushing wall and mortar wall (liner).

Hydraulic Cone Crusher

The main shaft of the movable cone is a cantilever structure, which results in slightly less stress resistance.

Compared to the “beam” structure of a multi-cylinder cone crusher, the main shaft of a single-cylinder cone crusher is cantilever-supported. When subjected to extreme loads or encountering difficult-to-crush materials, its structural rigidity and strength are theoretically inferior to those of a multi-cylinder cone crusher.

It is less adaptable to different material properties.

A multi-cylinder cone crusher can optimize the crushing chamber shape by adjusting the pressure of multiple hydraulic cylinders to accommodate materials of varying hardness and particle size. Single-cylinder cone crushers, on the other hand, lack this flexibility and have a relatively fixed chamber design.

Relatively high vibration levels.

During no-load startup or during unstable operating conditions, the vibration level of a single-cylinder cone crusher is generally higher than that of a multi-cylinder cone crusher.

In summary, the single-cylinder cone crusher, with its simple structure, high reliability, high degree of automation, and excellent iron protection, is a very efficient and economical device under suitable material conditions. However, its sensitivity to sticky and wet materials is a key consideration when selecting a crusher.
